July 6, 2024 – The American Automobile Association reported Saturday that the national average price of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.509 per gallon, one of the lowest average prices for a Fourth of July holiday in the past five years.

As the country emerged from the holiday weekend, motorists paid half a penny less per gallon than the day before, but on average just over a penny more than a week ago.

This time last year, the price of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.529 per gallon, and at this time in June, it was $3.487. In comparison, the highest recorded average price was $5.016 per gallon, which was on June 14, 2022.

The average price of regular unleaded gasoline in Mississippi is $2.991 per gallon, slightly higher than Friday but almost five cents higher than a week ago. It is also slightly higher than in June ($2.982) and a year ago ($2.966).

The Magnolia State has had the lowest average price in the country for regular unleaded gasoline in recent weeks, at just $2.911 per gallon on June 27.

In DeSoto County, gas stations in Horn Lake reported the lowest prices, according to the gasoline price monitoring website gasbuddy.com. The Murphy USA gas station on Goodman Road West, the Sam’s Club in Southaven on Goodman Road, the Walmart in Horn Lake on Goodman Road West and the Mapco on Goodman Road West in Horn Lake all reported their regular price for unleaded gasoline of $2.77 on Saturday, July 6, while four other stations in Horn Lake were within a nickel of that.

Gas stations in Petal and Brandon reported the lowest prices in Mississippi on Saturday at $2.69.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said: “While the first half of the summer was relatively quiet, things could get bumpy going forward. Activity in the tropics has increased and forecasts continue to predict a very eventful hurricane season.”
