When it comes to food, the Rushmore State is a real hidden gem. Just think of the many different restaurants in South Dakota – we haven’t left any category out. From fine dining to family restaurant. From fast food to buffet. From casual to take-out and bake.

One restaurant in the state is nailing ONE thing: steak! In Hill City, South Dakota, you’ll find one of the most popular destinations for filet mignon.

Winner of the Restaurant of the Year award, the Alpine Inn has been a Black Hills gold mine since the days of the Harney Peak Hotel in 1886.

Family owned and operated for over three decades, the restaurant is located on Main Street in Hill City and is a place where people from all over the world have dined and stayed.

Since there is only ONE dish on the menu during evening meals, you only have to answer two questions. What size and how do you like your fillet cooked? My answer is always the same: Large and medium-rare.

Hand-cut prime beef fillet, baked potato, toast and a wedge salad with homemade salad dressing.

The Alpine Inn doesn’t have children in mind, with cheese spaetzle, grilled cheese and the popular peanut butter and jam sandwich.

Fancy dessert? Given the length of the list, you might want to go for the small fillet.

The lunch menu is completely different. You will be spoiled with delicious German specialties such as schnitzel, croissant sandwiches, homemade soups and plenty of salads.

The Alpine Inn also offers a full range of Bavarian beers, wines and wine-based cocktails.

If you’re not sure, just ask the locals where they like to eat. Your Black Hills vacation isn’t complete without a stop at the Alpine Inn.
