Just one thing: good news and bad news

A happy ending, but not as happy as it could have been. Last Friday at around 1:15 a.m., an 18-year-old gangster in Northwest Washington, D.C. decided to carjack a guy who was in a car and seemingly had nothing to do with the car. The gangster walked up to the car and pulled out a gun. The would-be victim turned out to be a U.S. Marshal guarding the home of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Needless to say, the marshal pulled out his own gun and shot the gangster, and another marshal in another vehicle got out and shot him as well. The good news is that the gangster was stopped. The bad news is that he wasn’t seriously injured…not even close to dead, which would have been a better outcome. (I should note, however, that this is easy for me to do, since I don’t have to live with the potential guilt of killing a teenager, even if it was a bad teenager.) And the even worse news is that this type of crime is rampant in our nation’s capital, where the vast majority of the population (including members of Congress) do not have bodyguards.

Our guests today

Daniel Silva is on the “A-list” of great thriller writers, most famously its protagonist Gabriel Allon, a former Israeli spy/badass who starts a new private career as a restorer of extremely valuable old paintings and ends up solving crimes such as robbery, murder, and political machinations. Daniel has written 24 novels, all but three starring Allon, and all 24 have been bestsellers, with more than #1 on the NY Times list. Jack Carr cites Silva as one of the authors who inspired him (Carr) to become a writer. This is my first conversation with Daniel (at 9:33) and I will be hosting him next Thursday in Lone Tree for the Douglas County Libraries. Get tickets here: Featured Events | Douglas County Libraries (

Daniel’s new novel is titled “A Death in Cornwall”.
