After an extra-inning comeback to start the series, Lake County hitters continued their winning streak with two home runs in their game against Lansing on July 10.

Thanks to a strong start from Rorik Malturd and a strong defense that coped with changing winds throughout the game, the Captains won 5-2. It is the Captains’ fourth consecutive win after a mixed start to the second half of the season.

Lake County (51-31) took the lead first in the second inning when Jonah Advincula and Angel Zarate hit singles, with Zarate moving Advincula to third base. Tyresse Turner picked up runners at the corners and sent a line drive to right field.

The ball hit the ground right in front of the right fielder and a late break from Advincula gave the Captains the first strike.

Malturd had a strong performance with five strikeouts in six innings, but he had to get out of a difficult situation in the fourth inning.

Lansing tied the game with a one-out solo home run by Will Simpson to right field, his 10th of the season. Malturd struck out the next batter before a single by Brayan Buelvas and a stolen base put the lead runner in scoring position for the Lugnuts.

Cole Conn worked a walk and had two on base, but Malturd struck out Cameron Masterman and ended the threat.

Lake County’s bats provided run support in the bottom half of the inning, allowing Malturd to get back to work with the leadoff. Zarate also singled deep to right and scored his first solo hit of the season and of his High-A career to put the Captains back on top.

Turner reached center on a soft fly ball and stole second base on his next at-bat. Johnny Tincher hit a fly ball to right, fell between two Lugnuts fielders and chased it, allowing Tincher to score and put Lake County up 3-1.

Malturd turned to his defense to get out of another tight spot in the fifth inning. Sahid Valenzuela beat the throw to first base for a leadoff single, and Danny Bautista Jr. bounced a single off Maick Collado’s glove, allowing Valenzuela to advance to third base.

With runners on the corners, Malturd got Will Simpson to jump up to the left and get out of another sticky situation.

Lake County extended the lead in the bottom of the inning when Alex Mooney opened the inning with a double. Jorge Burgos then hit deep to left field for a two-run home run, his ninth of the season.

Lansing increased the lead in the sixth when Brayan Buelvas hit a ball to left that cleared the stands for his seventh of the year, but that was all the Lugnuts could muster in a comeback attempt.

Steve Hajjar, Juan Zapata and Magnus Ellerts pitched well as relievers, each pitching one inning and allowing just one hit. Ellerts made his 10th save of the season.

The teams return to the field for the third game of the series on July 11. First pitch begins at 7 p.m. Lake County sends Carter Spivey (5-1, 3.76 ERA) to the mound, while the Lugnuts counter with Jacob Walters (5-3, 5.65 ERA).
