MILWAUKEE — As the Republican National Convention (RNC) approaches, the look of downtown Milwaukee is changing.

Construction work in the Deer District, from signage to fencing to an outdoor stage, is almost complete.

However, those who visit Milwaukee frequently must expect not only signage, but also road closures, additional security measures and traffic delays.

Elizabeth Grout of Bublr Bikes encouraged cyclists to plan their routes accordingly.

“So Bublr will be closing ten of our stations in the RNC protected zone just because bikes are not allowed in the protected zone,” Grout said.

The following Bublr Bikes stations are closed:

  • 6. & Juneau Station, 551 W. Juneau Avenue
  • Deer District Station, 340 W. Highland Avenue
  • Station Fixers Forum, 441 W. Juneau Avenue
  • MLK and State Station, 285 W. State Street
  • Public museum station, 800 W. Wells Street
  • Vel R. Phillips & Kilbourn Station, 901 N. Vel R. Phillips Avenue
  • Vel R. Phillips and Wisconsin Station, 799 Vel R. Phillips Avenue

She said the unused bikes would be moved to other stations. Those who cannot park near their office or have to go through additional security checks to get to their destination can opt to use one of these bikes, she said.

“All of our other stations across the city will be open, so if you want to go downtown, Bublr is the best option for that because you don’t have to get searched or anything,” Grout said.

Many Wisconsin residents who work in downtown Milwaukee said they would take extra time off for the duration of the RNC, regardless of how they get to work.

Ozzy Ornelas has worked downtown for more than two decades. He’s not sure how the RNC will affect his work schedule, so he plans to just go with the flow.

“I plan to come into the office, then possibly have to leave early and work from home,” Ornelas said. “We’ll see.”

He said he wanted to allow himself more time for his commute to work.
